Red Flag Warning May 7, 2020

Extreme fire weather conditions are expected today across portions of southern Colorado. A quick moving storm system to the north will allow for strong gusty winds and very low humidity values from late this morning into this evening. Areas over the San Luis Valley, east into the Eastern Mountains will see northwesterly winds gusting 40 to 50 mph. Areas on the Plains will see north to northeasterly winds gusting to near 40 mph this afternoon and evening. These winds will combine with dry fuels and humidity values under 10 percent to produce extreme fire weather conditions. Avoid outdoor burning of any type, and do not use equipment that may cause a spark, as fires that ignite will spread rapidly. Winds will subside tonight heading into Friday morning. This will allow colder air to settle across the Plains. Temperatures are expected to fall into the lower to mid 30s. Given the elevated wind conditions, the frost and freeze potential appears low at this time. However, if you have sensitive plants, precautions should be taken to protect them tonight.
